Take the pulse...
Ultimately, every member of your target audience will find something valuable in your writing, but this can only happen if your book is truly representative. It may be easier to understand this necessity when it comes to non-fiction, but it’s equally true of fiction. For instance, a satisfying novel needs to have a wide array of characters who reflect the personalities and philosophies, and therefore generate the conflicts, that are provocative and timely for your target audience. You can only accomplish this with input from at least a few very different members of your target audience. Somehow, you need to get your finger on the pulse. Find out what’s missing from your book, what should be further developed, and what's irrelevant or overdone.
